Biocompatibility Intern — Paid, Part-Time (Philadelphia)

Location: 2 Liberty Place, Center City, Philadelphia — on-site Hours: 10–20 per week, flexible around your class schedule

Compensation: $19.00–$22.00 per hour

Status: Part-time hourly employee (W-2).

About the role

The Toxicology Intern is a part-time, primarily on-site internship supporting Groenakker's Operations team from the 2 Liberty Place office in Center City, Philadelphia. The role is administrative in focus: reviewing incoming sample submissions, performing sample receiving and shipping operations, communicating with clients to resolve sample discrepancies, and ensuring that submission documentation is complete and accurate so that testing can be subcontracted efficiently. Structured training in toxicology and toxicological risk assessment for medical devices is provided alongside the operational work, with the goal of developing the intern's ability to prepare chemical characterization and toxicological risk assessment drafts and related deliverables under supervision. The scope of this role is medical device toxicology program support specifically, rather than laboratory bench testing.

The schedule is 10 to 20 hours per week, set around your class commitments, and the role is ongoing with no fixed end date. Where your program allows, we can structure it to satisfy internship or co-op credit requirements.

What you'll do

• Review incoming sample submissions against test request documentation

• Receive, inspect, log, and store client-supplied test articles Prepare and ship samples to contract laboratories, and track them through delivery Identify sample discrepancies and work with clients to resolve them

• Maintain chain-of-custody and inventory records Assemble the documentation required to subcontract testing

• Coordinate with contract laboratories on submissions and study status

• Complete structured training in medical device toxicology, including ISO 10993-17 and -18 and the associated FDA guidance

• Compile device material, formulation, and manufacturing chemistry information to scope chemical characterization work

• Assemble extractables and leachables data, analytical chemistry reports, and published literature for review by a staff toxicologist

• Draft toxicological risk assessments and related biological evaluation documentation under supervision

What we're looking for

• Currently enrolled at a Philadelphia-area university — juniors, seniors, or graduate students

• Scientific coursework in toxicology, pharmacology, biochemistry, chemistry, biology, or a related life science discipline, including at least one course in organic chemistry or biochemistry

• Careful, detail-oriented approach to documents and records

• Clear, professional communication — you'll be in direct contact with clients

• Comfort with standard office software

• Able to work on-site in Center City for most of your scheduled hours, and to handle packaged test articles and shipping cartons

Coursework in toxicology, pharmacology, risk assessment, or medical device regulation is a plus, as is familiarity with analytical chemistry data (GC-MS, LC-MS, ICP-MS) or searching sources like PubMed, PubChem, ECHA, and the IARC monographs. We're especially interested in students who intend to build a career as a toxicologist, including those planning graduate study or eventual DABT certification.

No industry experience required — we'll teach you.

Travel: None required. Occasional local travel within Philadelphia.
